At White Meadows Farms, we’re passionate about showcasing the versatility of maple beyond the breakfast table. Whether you’re a loyal local or a curious traveler, we invite you to join us on another culinary adventure. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce the latest recipe to our Blog: Baked Flatbread with our very own Maple Onion Jam!

Onions… in Jam?
Maple Onion Jam is one of our most unique products! You may not have heard of onion jam but once you have had even the smallest taste – you’ll be hooked. This rich, caramelized concoction is perfect for adding depth to a variety of dishes. Just like our beloved maple syrup, the secret to its unmatched taste lies in the time and care we put into its creation. Imagine the tantalizing aroma of onions slowly caramelizing for hours, their natural sugars melding perfectly with our farm-fresh maple syrup – it’s a scent that makes the whole farm feel like a cozy kitchen, and yes, it might just make you a little hungry!
Other uses for Maple Onion Jam include, but are not limited to:
✔️ Gourmet Grilled Cheese (🤎 staff favourite!)
✔️ Burger Topper
✔️ Charcuterie Board (ps. check out our Tasting Boards!)
✔️ Savoury Tart or Galette Filling
✔️ Glaze pork, salmon or chicken
✔️ Add to a creamy pasta sauce
Should we write another blog about some of these other recipes that use onion jam? There is no shortage of ideas!

The Perfect Pairing: Vineland Estates Riesling
To elevate our Maple Onion Jam, we’ve partnered with our friends over at Vineland Estates Winery. Their semi-dry Riesling adds a delightful note that enhances the earthy flavours of the caramelized onions and maple. It’s a collaboration that brings out the best in both our products, creating a jam that’s truly extraordinary.
🥂 This wine would also make for an excellent pairing with the finished flatbread on a warm summer night…

⭐ Special Highlight: Maple Balsamic Reduction ⭐
To enhance this recipe with more maple flavour, the flatbread is finished with a drizzle of maple balsamic reduction. The tangy balsamic complements the rich flavours of the other ingredients, bringing the entire dish together. If you’re short on time, you can pick up a balsamic glaze from the grocery store, but if you can make the reduction yourself, you won’t be disappointed. For a maple balsamic reduction, simply combine a 2:1 ratio of balsamic vinegar to maple syrup and cook on the stovetop for about 15 minutes. I used ½ cup of balsamic vinegar and ¼ cup of dark maple syrup for this recipe, and have some left over for future use. Dark maple syrup is best for this recipe, but if you have another flavour on hand, go ahead and use it!
